“The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart.” Pr. 20:27

The spirit of man is the lamp that God uses to search the inner depths of the human heart. The word heart in the above scripture is the Hebrew word, beten, and it is translated many other times in the Old Testament as womb. It refers to the part of us where we conceive and give birth to ideas, vision for our lives, desires, plans, purposes, etc. It is where mere thoughts take form and frame our world. God created us with this heart so we could conceive His thoughts, His vision, His counsel, and His wisdom, and give birth to them in our lives. I believe our heart is especially important to God!

Jesus spoke about the heart of man, and we also read about it throughout the New Testament. The Bible instructs us to meditate on the Word of God day and night. God’s Word acts like life’s seed in the womb that, when conceived, brings transformation to our lives as it renews our mind with God’s thoughts. In the heart is where we have the capacity to conceive and give birth to God’s plan for our lives.

Understanding the importance that God places on our heart will also give us a better understanding of how God uses our spirit to search the inner depths of our heart. Remember, Jesus is the Intercessor within, searching out our deepest needs, and sends His thoughts into our heart to help us live victoriously in this fallen world that He came to redeem.  It’s also why it’s so important to pray in tongues. I Corinthians 14:14 says that when we pray in an unknown tongue, our spirit prays. And it’s our spirit that God uses as a lamp to search the inner depths of our heart. As we pray in tongues, our Intercessor begins to build us up and edify us with spiritual power. I Corinthians 14:3 says plainly that, “he who prays in an unknown tongue speaks…to God.” He is our Counselor, Comforter, Guide, Teacher and Revealer of Truth. And He works with us and through us as we cooperate with Him to bring about His will and plans in our lives.

We have been given a valuable asset that is designed to work within us; our heart! It is the womb of the soul where we give birth to the good things of God and His wonderful plans that will give us a hope and future!
