“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.” Romans 8:16
It’s comforting to know that we can depend on the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us into all truth, that He will remind us of everything He has said to us, and that He will show us things to come. But most of all, it’s comforting and empowering to know inside that we are the children of God. That may sound like a trite expression, but the reality is, we truly are His very own children, and He is our very own Father! The above verse also indicates that it is not only the Father’s desire that we know we are His children, but it is His priority that we have the abiding presence of His Spirit to bear witness that we are the children of God.
Many Christians don’t understand the inward witness of the Holy Spirit primarily because they haven’t been taught. The more we study the New Testament we clearly see that the Holy Spirit was real to the believers, that He was sent to teach us all things, guide us into all Truth, remind us of everything He has said, and show us things to come. Because of a lack of teaching of what the Bible clearly teaches, people are held in ignorance. They don’t believe God speaks to them,
shows them anything, or leads them. And that’s not true! We need to come to the place where we decide that the Bible is either right or wrong. Ask yourself these questions: What is leading me? Is the Spirit real? Can He lead me? Can I follow Him? If we believe the Bible is right, then our words and actions should agree with what the Bible teaches and not disagree.
As you go through your daily life, don’t dwell on the negative influences that are trying to lead you. Instead, let the Holy Spirit lead you. One way we can acclimate to His leading is to change our words to agree with His Words. When we change our words to agree with God’s Word, we’ll find that we are more in tune with that inward witness and we’ll know His voice, we’ll hear His voice and we’ll follow His voice because we know it’s the voice of the Good Shepherd.
Speak these words out loud daily:
“I believe in the witness of the Spirit! He guides me. He leads me into all the Truth. He brings to remembrance all things He has said to me. He shows me things to come! I have the inward witness. I am a Spirit led child of God! I refuse to be led by past experience, feelings, human reasoning, problems, emotions, pressures or fears. I am led by the Spirit of God who will continue to bear witness with my spirit that I am a child of God! He is always communicating with me. I set my expectations to agree with what the Word of God says about me!”
