“Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” John 5:19
The Bible teaches that Jesus is the express image of the very Person of God. That means that everything the Father is Jesus is. If we want to know what God is like, we have no further to look than Jesus. “In Him is the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Col. 2:9)” He said, “If you have seen Me, you’ve seen the Father! (John 14:9)” He was the will of God in human form. And, like Father like Son, He did what the Father did and, in the same manner!
The only window Jesus had to God and the realm of the spirit was the window of the scriptures. The Holy Spirit revealed the scriptures to Him and gave Him wisdom and revelation. Through the scriptures Jesus saw what the Father did, and how He did it. He saw the Father as Creator in Genesis! He saw Him as the Deliverer in Exodus, He saw Him in Deuteronomy as a Covenant keeping God! He saw how He accomplished things in Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, and the pure worship of God in the Psalms! He saw His Father through the prophets, and He also found his own identity in the written Word. It was the joy of the Father to see His Son grow up into the full expression of everything the Father is and to speak boldly about it, and He did it with excellence!
Jesus’ mission wasn’t to expose our sin and condemn us. That was already accomplished through the law. Jesus’ mission, among other things, was to fulfill the law on our behalf and redeem us to God! Then, through the new birth He recreated a new spirit in us, which gave us the capacity to be filled with all the fullness of God, just like Jesus! Let’s follow Jesus’ example, andreflect the glory of the Father who wants you and the rest of the world to experience His love forever! The Bible says “Now are we the sons of God… (I John 3:2).” It’s not just doing what He did but doing it the way He did it that enables us to be the true reflection of the saying,
Like Father Like Son!
With Love,
Pastor Tom
