“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know…” Ephesians 1:18
Have you ever heard someone say, “I only have two eyes!” Did you know that the Bible says we have more than two eyes? In fact, the Bible tells us lots of things about us that we have yet to understand.
For instance, several times during His teachings, Jesus would say, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Everyone who was listening to Him had ears, but Jesus was referring to different ears. Jesus also talked about those who had eyes yet had no perception of the principles Jesus was revealing to them in the parables He used.
Paul prayed for the believers at Ephesus. He wrote to them a prayer so they could pray it for themselves, and since it’s in the Bible, it’s really for all believers. We too can pray this prayer in Ephesians 1:16-23 over ourselves! God wants to open the eyes of our understanding. The word understanding is the Greek word, dianoia. It has also been translated elsewhere in the New Testament as imagination.
God created us with an imagination for a reason. Our imagination is powerful. It can be filled with fear to the point where a person’s hair turns white in seconds! The imagination is much more than fantasy. It’s a living organ of the mind that designs things much like an architect does and etches images into our minds that move us to action. The Bible teaches us how to harness our imagination and allow us to see ourselves, others, God, the Bible, and our situations and limitations the way God sees them! The Holy Spirit is very much involved with our imaginations.
The Holy Spirit reveals the Word of God to us by etching images from the scriptures into our understanding and we begin to understand things from God’s perspective. When you begin to see yourself as God sees you, the Word will become a lamp to your feet and a light to your path! Direction will be clear, and confusion will dissolve!
You have more than two eyes! God has given you eyes to see where others cannot see, things that are not yet revealed to your physical senses. It’s how we enjoy His presence moment by moment and experience the life He created us for!
