“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (for the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)” 1 John 1:1-2
In the Old Covenant, when men were not yet born again, the Holy Spirit would only rest upon a few individuals temporarily. He would rest upon the prophets, and sometimes other individuals for specific purposes, like Gideon, Samson, King David, and others. The only place on earth where God’s presence could abide was among His Covenant people in the very inner part of the temple which was known as the Holy of holies. It was covered with a thick veil because the presence of God was such a magnificent and glorious presence that no man could see God and live. (Exodus 33:20)
However, when Jesus died on the Cross, there was a great earthquake and the veil in the temple was torn apart from the top to the bottom, and God’s presence moved from a temple of stone into the temple of mankind, into the hearts of all who believed in Jesus and were cleansed of their sins through faith in His shed Blood. Because of the new nature we have inherited through the new birth, God’s presence dwells in us, and now WE are the temple of God! (1 Cor. 3:16)
The Christian life is therefore not a continual struggle to be something we’re not! Nor is it a struggle to be holy enough for God to hear our prayers, or to try and obtain things that we don’t have. No, the Christian life is one of manifesting what we have already been given, and the New Testament is a categorical list of our inheritance and all we have been given. It’s learning how to access those promises, blessings and Covenant provisions that became ours when we received Christ. All these provisions are ours along with the power that was given to us in the Person of the Holy Spirit! (Acts1:8) 1 Corinthians 12:7 says. “…the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:” Manifestation is a great word to describe the life of faith. It’s a Great New Covenant Word!
With Love,
Pastor Tom
