“For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.”. I Corinthians 14:14-15

When I was newly born again, I would end praying wondering if my prayers were really connecting with God. After all, why would God Almighty actually listen to me? At the end of my prayers there was always that lingering question; and I wanted more than questions and theory. I wanted reality! If we’re being honest, I think this describes many in the Body of Christ who desire a real prayer life rather than a theoretical one.

In those days I read scriptures about speaking in tongues, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, and the gifts of the Spirit. I remember feeling like an outsider looking in… my own prayers left me with more questions than answers. Then I read this scripture in I Corinthians 14:14… “my spirit prays…” I suddenly became aware that there was a spiritual dimension to prayer I had yet to explore!

I saw that whether we pray in an unknown tongue, or with our understanding, the Bible says nothing about God willing us to pray, or God initiating our prayers. Paul said “I Will FOUR TIMES IN ONE VERSE! … Paul said that he was praying as an act of his own will and volition, whether he was praying in tongues, or whether he was praying with his understanding! He said, I Will pray with the spirit, and I Will pray with the understanding, I Will sing with the spirit… I Will sing with the understanding…” Paul also told us that when we pray in an unknown tongue it’s our spirit praying…

Unknown tongues is an amazing dimension to prayer that is available to all believers! Acts 2:39 states: For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

If you have a will and a desire for a richer fellowship with God, more answers than questions, and to go beyond theory and enjoy the reality of connecting with God in prayer, it all happens when you allow your spirit to pray… according to the Bible… “When I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays!”
