“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” I John 2:6
This is an amazing verse because it actually authorizes us to walk as Jesus walked, and to expect the Power of the Spirit to confirm our message with signs and wonders. Jesus said to His disciples at the Last Supper, just before he went to the Cross, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you!” John 15:7
Since both of these scriptures address abiding in Him, in Christ, we can put them together and gain some important insight into how Jesus walked.
Jesus said, If you abide in Me…
How do we know we are abiding in Him? Like the scripture above says, we walk as He walked. Jesus walked with the Father. He was led by the Spirit. The scriptures were His foundation, meaning that He allowed the scriptures to define Him and give Him His identity. He loved righteousness and hated iniquity. He loved truth and hated lies and deception. Above all, He walked in love toward everyone, even those who crucified Him! He was Love manifested in the flesh!
If My Words Abide in You…
In order for the Word of God to abide, or live in someone, it means looking to the Word of God as their source, and foundation for life! It means meditating on the Word until the Word begins to have a voice. If the Word abides in you, the Word will act like a compass when you’re being tempted or led astray. If you’re being tempted to hate someone the Word in you will be that compass inside, pointing to the way you need to go, and you’ll also know what to do in any situation.
You Shall Ask What YOU Will…
If you’re abiding in Him, and His Words are abiding in you, you will have an assurance inside that your prayers will be answered, because you will know the will of God. The Word of God is His will. The word ask has several meanings. It means to ask or beseech. But it also means to call forth. This means that God will not allow our words and our prayers to go unanswered or unfulfilled, because our will and His are one.
Jesus lived what He taught. This is how Jesus lived and walked in His own life when He lived among us. If we say we abide in Him, then we ought to also walk as He walked. If we do, there will be no question whether we are abiding in Him, or not.
