“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16

There is never a better time to come to the amazing Throne of Grace than when we have a need. That is the appropriate time for us to be confident and bold in response to God’s invitation and truly express our heart. The preceding verses (Heb. 4:14-15) tell us that we have a High Priest (Jesus) who CAN be touched with the feelings of our weaknesses, for He was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin. So, He continues to instruct us to “…come boldly to the Throne of Grace to obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need!” Let’s look at what God is saying here, and bring it into the realm of faith rather than leave it to chance or opinions. There are two words that we need to understand in order for this verse to come to life for us; they are boldly and obtain.

The word ‘boldly’ is the Greek word parresia, which means boldness, frankness, forthrightness, and outspokenness. God wants us to be very direct in approaching Him and expressing our need. We never have to feel timid or fearful about telling the Lord exactly what we are facing, or what we need, because He is encouraging us to do just that in this verse! Man’s religion will tell us we shouldn’t be bold with God, but God tells us to come boldly to Him!

If you are experiencing a time of need – whatever that need is, you can come to God. You can come confidently and directly and be frank with Him. That’s how we OBTAIN mercy and FIND grace to help. The word ‘obtain’ is another word we need to understand in order to receive what God is offering us. It’s the Greek word katalambano, which is a compound of two Greek words; kata and lambano. Kata refers to something that is coming downward, and the word lambano means to grab hold of, to seize, to wrestle, to pull down, and to finally make a desired object your very own. I guess this brings to naught the age-old religious adage that says ‘If God wants me to have it He’ll give it to me.” This verse would make that notion an absurdity. God is telling us to aggressively take His Mercy!

Why would God request us to be so aggressive? I believe there are several reasons, but God knows that the devil will do anything he can to steal away or talk us out of the things we obtain from God. So, God wants us to be bold in our approach to Him, frank and outspoken concerning our requests, and tenacious in obtaining His provisions. Bold faith is what pleases God and He delights in us aggressively taking Him at His Word. That’s what faith does! And that’s how faith finds grace to help in time of need!

With Love,
