“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” – I Corinthians 3:11
People build their lives on a wide variety of foundations: personal interests, talents, finances, friendships, family ties… the list goes on. And there is nothing wrong with developing in those abilities and talents we were born with, excelling in them and being fruitful. Actually, God created us with those unique and creative talents! He wants us to be fruitful. But we may want to dig a bit deeper.
The Bible says that there is no other foundation we can build on other than the Person of Christ, Himself, that will fulfill not only our natural abilities, but our spiritual ones too! We are eternal spirits, and nothing in, or of this world can satisfy the eternal spirit of man. It’s only when we follow Him by doing what He has instructed us to do, that we will succeed no matter what storms, floods, or winds we encounter. Many have been hit with life changing losses. For example, athletes may experience a career ending injury, a CEO may suffer losses from sudden market shifts, a surgeon may lose the use of his hands… Suddenly their direction in life is altered. Nothing in this world is guaranteed. That’s usually when we discover what our Foundation was made of.
One day, we will know, all too well what our foundation was. Because that’s what we were trusting in. I trust you will find that yours was a solid foundation, built on the rock of the Lord Jesus Christ, and not the shifting sands of a fallen world. Jesus came to give us an abundant life, and we can safely trust in Him as the only sure foundation that has remained unchanging and solid for 2,000 years! “For no other foundation can be laid than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ!”
