“A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,” Proverbs 1:5 NKJV

Isaiah 9:6 says, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given… and His Name shall be called… Counsellor…”

Our title verse draws in Proverbs used to draw a mental picture in my mind of going into the
office of some scholarly individual who could give profound insights and counsel about life.
Many seek this kind of counsel, and while we can learn things from them, God has given

believers a more excellent way of receiving counsel.

The New Testament is filled with powerful truths concerning the type of counsel that is readily
available to all believers. Paul prayed for the Ephesian church, in Ephesians 1, that God would
give them the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation in the knowledge of God… Actually, the prayers
in Ephesians 1:17-23, and 3:16-21, are prayers for all of us who believe, since the New Testament
is for all believers. And we would do well to pray these prayers for ourselves on a daily basis.
During the Last Supper, Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would be our Teacher and Counselor. He
also told us that He would guide us into all truth, show us things to come, and Teach us ALL
THINGS! Jesus told His disciples us how the Holy Spirit would teach and counsel us. He said,
“…he will guide you into all truth… But how does He guide us and teach us? He said, “…for he

shall receive of mine, and shall show them to us.” John 16:13-14

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead, and He is just as much God as Jesus and the
the Father are! And He longs to counsel us, guide us, and reveal THE Truth to us!
So, if we can benefit somewhat from the counsel of men, it’s best to learn how to hear and
receive the counsel of the Holy Spirit and increase in true learning. He is the wisest Counselor,
and He is the Spirit of Truth! And we all know what the Truth will do for us, don’t we? “The

Truth will make you free!” John 8:32
