“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2
Many times, we limit our fellowship with God because we don’t see ourselves as He sees us, so there is no common ground of fellowship. In other words, our thoughts about ourselves are out of agreement with what God has said about us. Therefore, our fellowship is limited with Him. Think about it, it’s easy to fellowship with someone who thinks the way you do, who understands things the way you do, and who has similar interests. But it’s difficult to fellowship with someone who doesn’t think the way you do, doesn’t value your position, and is never willing to come into agreement with you. It’s the same way with God. He wants to have a common ground of fellowship with us. So, He sent His Word to teach us about His Truth, His Life, and His Ways.
When Jesus redeemed us to God, our spirit man was completely re-created. Our soul and our body, however, were not redeemed. That’s why the scriptures say in Romans 12:1, that we are to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, and get our minds renewed with the Word of God. The word renewed is the Greek word anakainosis, which means to renovate. It gives us the picture of a building that has been gutted and reduced to its frame, then it is rebuilt to where there is no connection to its former condition or state. It has no trace of its old condition! In other words, it has been transformed.
That’s the affect the Word of God has on us. It begins to tear down old mindsets that thought patterns once held us bound to the limitations of this world. It also trains us to think and perceive differently and it begins to displace old images with new ones. Instead of worldly wisdom, we begin to receive Godly wisdom and deeper understanding. When we allow the Word to renovate our minds, we’ll begin to experience our transformation. Does that sound like a lifelong process? It is! But when you begin to apply the Word, you’ll realize that you’re not obtaining some kind of new transformation. No, you’ll find the transformation had already taken place when you were born again – when you became a new creation! But you were still not able to fellowship with God the way He desired; not until you started to see yourself as God does and fellowship with Him in the light of who He is and who you are! You are of God, created in His image and born again in His likeness! The Word of God reveals your total transformation from when you were born again! 1 John 4:17 says, “…as He (Jesus) is, so are we in this world.”
