“…The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” James 5:16
It’s exciting to know that God wants to make many things available to us through prayer. Things that were purchased for us at a very high price. That price, of course, was the death of His own Son, whose Blood became the seal of the everlasting Covenant, that contain the provisions, promises, blessings and benefits that are ours through faith that in Jesus Christ, who is the Mediator of the Covenant as well as your High Priest and Advocate! It’s faith in His Blood that gives us the gift of righteousness.
“The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much… This is not a passive statement. It is full of power when we realize that all of heaven is ready to respond to us when we come to the Father the way He has instructed us to – with effective and fervent prayer.
The word, ‘effective’ is defined as “producing the intended, or expected result.” This means we are to be intentional about our requests. In order for our prayers to be effective it means that we are to expect Him to be faithful to honor His Word and supply those things He has made available to us in the New Covenant. Why wouldn’t He? The Blood of His Son paid for every provision so we can avail ourselves of those promises.
Other scriptures instruct us to have confidence in our loving, heavenly Father. 1 John 5:14-15 says, “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: and if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” People have strange ideas about what the will of God is. The best place to go to find God’s Will is His Word. If we have a need in our life, our part is to find a scripture that provides a promise or benefit that addresses that need and bring that scripture before the Lord in prayer. Then, confidently ask Him to supply your need according to His Covenant promise. God has already stamped His approval on all His promises in the Bible! 2 Corinthians 1:20 states, “For all the promises of God in Him (in Christ) are Yes, and in Him (in Christ) Amen, to the glory of God through us.”
Now, if anyone were to read that verse in the newspaper, they would accept is as fact. Yet, somehow when they see it in the Bible, they question it! Faith has no questions or uncertainties. Faith takes God’s Word as fact. God’s Word says that, if you have been born again, you are In Christ, and all the promises in God are yours! Pray the promise – not the problem! Pray the blessing and not the curse. Pray the verse of scripture that meets your need, and you’ll find that God is faithful to fulfill His promises when He hears an effective, fervent and confident prayer!
With Love,
Pastor Tom
