“But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.” I Thessalonians 5:8

The world has one view of hope, and we, as believers, have an entirely different view of hope. The Bible says that the hope we have from God is ALIVE! Our hope tells us that one day, we will go to heaven. We have accepted that truth, and we have that assurance in us that we will be there one day. It hasn’t happened yet, and we’ve never seen heaven, but we have the Words of Jesus, who, at the Last Supper, said, “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:2-3)

The type of hope the world has, and I know I shouldn’t generalize, but from the way I hear most nonbelievers use the word hope, it’s generally used in a “no-confidence” way, in a negative tone, like a resignation to prevailing, negative circumstances. Our hope, on the other hand, which is the hope that faith gives substance to, is what the Bible describes as a Confident Expectation of Change for the Good! If we would place as much confidence in this God-kind of hope as a soldier places in his armor, our confidence level would be supernaturally high!

Now, we wear our helmets to protect our minds. This is how we keep our thoughts anchored in the eternal truths concerning our salvation, both for this life and eternity. The hope we have from God is what protects our minds; our thoughts, mental images and our knowledge of Christ, and keeps us anchored to God, Himself (Hebrews 6:19)! The Bible calls this hope an anchor for our souls that reaches beyond this world and into heaven’s very throne room, keeping us vitally connected with God, His Presence, and His Truth as our shield and buckler!

Our minds are powerful, and they need to be anchored in the power of Hope in His Word, so when strong currents, winds and waves threaten to pull us out to nowhere, our anchor will hold sure and steadfast. It reaches into heaven’s provisions and gives us assurance to know that we are connected with the Father and that He loves us and that He’s got us!

So, let us, who are of the day, be watchful, and put on our armor; especially our helmet, which is our hope and salvation, and remain anchored to His promise, and remain Confident in the Hope of God!

With Love,

Pastor Tom
