“…Incline thine ear unto my sayings.” Proverbs 4:20
Sometimes it’s hard to just listen. Many times, we want to jump in and offer our insights, but those who listen are those who learn, and those who learn, are always learning the art of listening.
God is a Spirit. He speaks to our spirit, not in words we hear in the natural, but words that come to our spirit through promptings, intuitions and impressions. Many time He speaks to us through scriptures that we suddenly remember. Other times it may come from a conversation we had that the Holy Spirit is reminding us of… The Holy Spirit is constantly communicating with us, and we need to train our inner ear to hear and recognize His voice. In order to train there needs to be a plan.
One thing many believers don’t realize is that their spirit needs training just as much as their minds do. In order to hear the voice of God, you need to understand the language He uses. The more we Meditate on His Word, the more we become acclimated to His voice. Meditation by definition involves reading, studying and speaking the Word aloud.
Then we need to Practice the Word by doing what it says, James 1:22 tells us to be “…doers of the Word and not hearers only, deceiving our own selves.” Just because we read the Word or listen to it without actually doing what it says, we open ourselves up to deception. It’s when we do the Word that we sense the Holy Spirit begins to illuminate and reveal the scriptures to us.
Next, we need to Give the Word first place in our lives. God doesn’t force us to obey His Word. If that were the case, there would be no need for the word ‘obey,’ because His will would be forced upon us. No, obedience is the part we play in order for God to fulfill His promises in our lives. He loves to see His children walking in His Word and finding the joys He is able to give them through a life of obedience.
Finally, we need to Instantly Obey the Voice of Our Spirit. That means that we need to be expecting to hear and be prompt to do what He says. There are always blessings when we act on the impressions, promptings and intuitions of the Lord.
Incline you ear unto MY (God’s) sayings… Train yourself to hear His voice!
1) Meditate on His Word
2) Practice His Word by applying it to life situations
3) Give the Word First Place – let it be your number one priority
4) Be prompt in obeying your spirit
With Love,
Pastor Tom
