“…the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God.” I John 3:1-2
One of the realities of the new birth is that we are now identified by heaven as being “In Christ!” Although we were born in Adam, once we receive Christ as Lord and Savior, we are no longer identified in heaven as one of Adam’s race. We are now in the family of God! We are new creations, and “…old things have passed away…” (II Corinthians 5:17). All claims that the world had on us were dissolved by the Blood of Jesus!
The devil will try to deceive us though. The first thing the devil tries to do is tamper with our new identity in Christ. When Jesus was being tempted in the wilderness, the devil used subtlety in order to try to confuse Jesus about his identity. He said, “IF you are the son of God…” Well, there was no “IF,” as far as Jesus was concerned. He knew who He was, and His identity wasn’t contingent upon His ability to turn stones to bread! Our identity in Christ is not contingent upon anything other than what the Word of God says about us. Jesus used the Word of God as His defense, which gave the devil no advantage, and he left. From that time on, satan never challenged Jesus face to face again!
The Bible identifies us and defines us as “the children of God”, and joint heirs with Christ (Romans. 8:17). It tells us that, “as He (Jesus) is, so are we in this world” (I John 4:17). Maintaining our identity in Christ is to believe what God says about us and renew our minds with the Truth. The devil has no mastery over the Word of God! We are who God says we are! If we believe what God says about Himself, we must also believe what He says about us, and continue to exalt His Word above what we think, see, hear, or feel. That’s how we Maintain Our Identity in Christ!
With love,
Pastor Tom
