“And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” – Luke 10:41-42 NKJV

One of the great themes of the Bible is the excellence of the Word of God, and the excellence of those who embrace it! However, life moves fast and people get busy and priorities begin to preclude giving first place to the Word. That’s usually when something major happens, when people are unprepared. Such was the case when Jesus showed up at Lazarus’s home, and Martha, Lazarus’s sister, stayed in that busy mode! Instead of engaging Jesus, she missed the opportunity to join her sister, Mary, at Jesus’ feet and listen to Him. But at the time it seemed to Martha that preparing food for a house full of guests was more important. Like I said, sometimes we all get busy. Yet it was obvious that Jesus impacted Martha, because we read in John 11:20, when Jesus visited them again, Martha was the one who went out to meet Jesus while Mary remained in the house. That’s when Jesus raised her brother, Lazarus, from the dead!

Proverbs 4:20 says, “My son, attend to My Words…” That means regard God’s Word as the very center of our lives. We have no idea what Martha may have missed during Jesus’ first visit. But when Martha got it right and started majoring on the majors by putting the Word (Jesus) first, Jesus was there for her with the power she needed at the time. That was the power that raised her brother, Lazarus, from the dead.

Have you ever wondered what you may have missed by being too busy to spend time in God’s Word? Let’s not major on the minors any longer. Let’s turn that wondering into a love for the excellence of the Word of God. Jesus might just surprise you, too!

With Love,

Pastor Tom
