“Therefore, whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:” Matthew 7:24
This may sound like ‘majoring on the minors’ here, but those four words, “…I will liken him…” speak volumes about Jesus. When Jesus says, “I will,” it’s a powerful statement! It’s a promise that cannot be altered or withdrawn, and it’s upheld by God’s own integrity. And when He said, “whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock,” it tells us that Jesus is always present with us to identify with us when we listen to Him and do what he says. After all, He is the Rock and source of life itself! And when we hear His instructions and do them, Jesus calls that wisdom!
One of the definitions of the word, liken, is to describe. Have you ever thought about Jesus describing you to someone? When I was reading this verse those four words suddenly carried a very personal tone. I realized that Jesus desires to describe us as people He wants to identify with as His own! That really shouldn’t come as a surprise to us, because the entire New Testament gives us His identity, a description of who we are in Christ! We are new creations, and have been endued with gifts of the Spirit, and equipped with the fruit of His Spirit! It tells us that nothing is impossible to those who believe! In fact, it even says that we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16), so we can think of ourselves like He thinks of us!
Matthew 7:26 tells us the flip side of those who ignore Jesus’ sayings. It says, “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
There is a reality here that we all must face. We can either be doers of the Word of God and enjoy His love and live in safety and peace, or we can ignore His Word, and allow the world to lay claim to our future and become victims of the storms of life. “This world is passing away…but those who DO His will shall abide forever (1 John 2:17).” It’s really as simple as our next decision. If you want to take the questions out of your future and replace it with confident peace, it’s a matter of deciding to believe and follow, or not to believe, and walk away. Whatever we believe will be the arbiter of our future. So, if we welcome Jesus into our boat to guide us, He will never jump ship when storms come. He’ll keep you safe!
With love,
Pastor Tom
