“Moreover, it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” I Corinthians 4:2

In Acts 6 we are introduced to Stephen who was appointed as one of the seven deacons to administer a service – basically, he was to take care of the needs of the people and see to it that everyone was cared for. Stephen was faithful to fulfill this role as a good steward. As he was faithful to his ministry, God began to promote him into a powerful supernatural ministry. It said he “…did great wonders and signs among the people.”

It is said that Stephen was chosen because he was held in good reputation, he was full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, as were the other six deacons. Yet, Stephen stood out. So much so, that the cancel culture began to plot against him with false accusations. They dragged him before a kangaroo court with a predetermined verdict – death! So, they accused him of blasphemy and stoned him.

But, before he died, he had this testimony, that he pleased God. He looked up and saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God ready to receive him as the first martyr of the church. All other accounts of Jesus in the New Covenant refer to Him being seated at God’s right hand, yet, He stood for Stephen.

Stephen was a faithful witness! He was Submitted to the Word of God. He was Accountable to those who appointed him. He was Committed to God’s purpose for his ministry. He was Consistent whether he was serving tables, ministering miracles, or being persecuted for righteousness’ sake. He was also a magnificent Steward of the grace of God!

Saul of Tarsus witnessed the death of Stephen in complete approval. Later, when Saul was saved and became the Apostle Paul, I’m sure he was thinking fondly of Stephen when he wrote; “Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.”

He was consistent to the end!
