“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” Galatians 3:13-14

These two verses are amazing! They are to celebrated, studied, and meditated on! First, there was a cause for the curse that we need to acknowledge. If we don’t know the cause, we cannot understand the terms of our redemption from the curse. Proverbs 26:2 says, “… the curse causeless shall not come.” There was a cause for the curse.

The curse was the result of man’s failure to fulfill the Law’s conditions. That’s all of us. Obedience to the law was impossible for mankind who inherited Adam’s fallen nature. Even if we obeyed the law completely, the law was incapable of changing our sin nature. “…by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.” Galatians 2:16

Man needed to be rescued from his own NATURE! It was his nature that alienated him from God! This is what the new birth is all about. Man could not be fixed through education or wealth. He needed redemption from spiritual death and to be birthed into spiritual life! Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life.” John 10:27-28

Jesus took away the curse of the law by fulfilling the law on our behalf! Now, having been born into the family of God, we have been redeemed from the demands of the law that was given to drive us to Christ in the first place! The law demanded death for sin, and Jesus died in our place, willingly, taking our sin into Himself, the innocent for the guilty, and deposited it in hell along with its power, authority, memory, and the curse it brought upon man!

Now, the Blessing of Abraham, the Power of the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit of Faith have come upon us, and in us through Jesus Christ!

By the way, all the effects of the curse are given in Deuteronomy 28:15-68. It is a categorical list of everything we have been redeemed from as born-again believers! It’s worth meditating on as much as we meditate on the benefits of a Spirit-filled life! Let’s receive the joyous news that we have been redeemed from the curse in order to be Blessed, filled with the Spirit, and living by faith! Then we’ll find our identity in the One who redeemed us by His amazing love and grace!

With Love,

Pastor Tom
