“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11
I love studying the armor of God and the analogies each piece of armor draws for us! It’s an empowering study that never really stops intriguing me. The more I learn the more I want to learn! However, I began to notice that the verses following the categorical list of the armor all pointed to prayer! That’s when I saw in a very new way that prayer is a battlefield, and we need to be dressed for the occasion!
The above verse suggests that we need to put on the armor in order to stand against the wiles of the devil. Without this armor, and a knowledge of how to use it, we cannot stand against the wiles of the devil; and his main target is the believer who prays! That doesn’t mean we should be afraid to pray. No, on the contrary! It simply points to the fact that our prayers are powerful! That’s why God has equipped us with the necessary armor for maximum protection, and the right weapons to successfully defeat all the power of the enemy!
Let’s take a quick look:
Each piece of armor is descriptive of something inside of us that the enemy likes to attack:
- The Loin Belt of Truth – Psalm 51:6 says, “Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.” Truth literally gives us inside information and wise strategies for every battle!
- The Breastplate of Righteousness – Righteousness is a gift that brings us into a right-standing with God through faith in the Blood of Christ; His righteousness acts like a breastplate protecting all our vital organs.
- Shoes Prepared for Peace – This peace is God’s own peace that crushed storms and conquered all opposing forces. We never go anywhere that His peace is not fully available.
- Shield of Faith – Deflects ALL the fiery darts of the enemy’s deception, accusations, condemnation and guilt, inferiority, confusion, fear and strife; and keeps us on the offensive and moving forward!
- The Helmet of Salvation – Covers your mind and thoughts. It renovates and renews our mind establishing God’s thoughts of us; thoughts of expected end, and a life with a future!
- The Sword of the Spirit – The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God.
- Praying with All Kinds of Prayer – Prayer is a battlefield, and we need to be dressed for the occasion – This is the Right Gear for the Right Fight! Remember, this is God’s own Armor and prayer is the battlefield where the Holy Spirit begins to train us in the uses of the armor of God. Once we’re trained in private, we’ll be ready for open warfare that wins souls, defeats demonic narratives with Truth, and magnifies the goodness of God that leads people to repentance.
Let the Love of God prevail!
