“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” Matthew 6:6
This verse begins with a “But,” which points to a transition. The previous verse says, “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.” So, we can see that Jesus is contrasting those who pray in pretense and show, whose rewards are the praises of men; with those who pray for results, those who stand in in faith and trust, whose rewards are from God alone.
In other words, if our intentions are merely to be seen of men, then that is our reward. But, if we go into our room, shut the door, and pray to our Father, WHO IS IN THE SECRET PLACE, our Father, who sees in secret, will reward us openly with answers, solutions, provisions, and blessings that will overflow and become noticeable to all. And – God will get the glory!
Psalm 91:1 says, “He who dwells in THE SECRET PLACE of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” God has a sincere desire for the world to see His silhouette overshadowing us. It gives Him great joy to honor those who honor Him. Luke 12:32 says that, “…it is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom!” Think about that!
All He is asking us to do is to shift our focus from the world, people, arguments, strife and the fears of life that only grow worse by the day – and look to Him with both eyes until we begin to see Him as a Father – not a Judge, as our Redeemer – not our accuser, as our Protector, our Refuge, our Fortress, and our faithful Father in whom we trust! That’s when we begin to experience the meaning of our relationship with God, and enter into fellowship with Him in the Secret Place! That secret place has been prepared for you, and has been waiting for you to enter in. Come in, close the door behind you, and connect with the very One who proved His love for you by giving His only Son to redeem you to Himself! He wants you to enjoy a full, rewarding, and fulfilling life in the true riches that the world knows nothing about, riches and treasures that are birthed in… THE SECRET PLACE.
