“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32
According to the above scripture, freedom is defined by Truth itself, being its very fruit. Though truth and freedom are not synonymous, it seems that freedom cannot exist without truth.
Jesus said that the Word of God is Truth (John 17:17), and James called the Word of God “the perfect law of liberty” (James 1:25), which implies that by continuing to apply the Word and doing the Word, we will experience the freedom Jesus spoke of.
So, how do we define freedom? What are we to look for? How do we know when we are free? Where is the finish line? I can only say this: we all differ as individuals. The human race, fallen and broken as it is, has a multiplicity of problems, questions, shortcomings, weaknesses, attitudes, emotional imbalances, and limited understanding, as we all see through a glass darkly. But, even as the Word of God is eternal, and there seems to be no end to how free we can be, I believe that the freedom the Truth brings us is equally eternal!
So if we’re looking for a finish line to cross on which we might rest our laurels, or a definition of freedom that we can boast of obtaining; would it be too much to accept that as long as we are in this world; our ongoing relationship with Jesus, who is the Word, who is the Truth, and is the Way, will always require our all, our uttermost, and nothing less? After all, would God ever give us a life that didn’t require faith? We are a continual work in progress, and we do experience freedom to the extent that we allow God’s Word to displace our own thoughts, our will and our own ways. His thoughts toward us will always far exceed our own and therein lies a freedom so vast it can only be revealed in the increments that our faith will take us! We do have an eternal Guide – the Spirit of God – and we know that His Truth and His Freedom will endure to all generations!
With Love,
Pastor Tom
