“And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” Revelation 5:9
In order to understand what it means to be redeemed, we first need to understand the word, redemption. The word, redeem means, to recover ownership of by paying a specified sum. Well, Jesus, Himself, was the specified Price that God paid to redeem mankind. Another definition of redeem is to buy back what was previously yours.
Mankind was God’s crown of creation. “Adam was the son of God” (Luke 3:38). God gave the earth and all that was in the earth, and everything the earth produced, to Adam. Adam had dominion and authority in the earth to rule over it. That all changed when he bowed his knee to satan and sold out the entire unborn human race to satan, sin, and death. Man was bound by sin and as sin escalated man’s lifespans decreased.
The Responsible Creator was the Responsible Redeemer
God began to reveal His Plan of Redemption through the years. He made a Covenant with Abraham to produce the race through which He would bring Messiah into the world. That race was the Hebrew race. Through that race, God raised up prophets through which God would speak and reveal more about His Plan of Redemption. Then, 2,000 years after Abraham, The Promised Messiah entered into the world in the exact place the prophet Micah prophesied 700 years earlier, Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).
The primary reason that God, the Son, had to become a man was because that was where the dominion was. Genesis 1:26 “…let them have dominion… over all the earth.” By becoming a man, Jesus, being sinless, would have the same dominion Adam had, and He defeated satan on his own turf!
His Life was Our Ransom
Jesus’ own words tell us that was a strategy to His life and ministry. He said that he didn’t come to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many!” He came to earth “…to give His life a ransom for many.”
When He gave His life for us on the Cross, He took our sins, and our judgment for our sins. A price had to be paid and Jesus was that Price.
His Resurrection from the dead says many things. It says that a price has been paid for our sins in full, so we can come to God and receive forgiveness of sins. It means that His sacrifice for us says that we have been legally ransomed from the slavery and bondage of sin, and there’s nothing the devil can do about it. We now belong to God – not satan – and our God is a Liberator!!
So, whatever definition you want to give the word Redeemed, the Bible says it means You Are Free!
Let’s Walk in that Freedom!
With Love,
Pastor Tom
