“And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Mt. 16:19
I remember the first time my dad handed me the keys to his car. What an exciting moment that was! He was actually handing me the freedom to go wherever I wanted to go, and get there as fast I wanted to! He literally placed the well-being of his car and my future in my hands! If you think about it, that’s exactly what Jesus did when He gave us the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven! He even expanded that thought at the Last Supper when He said, “…I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” (John 14:12-14). Any lawyer would have to agree that Jesus literally gave us power of attorney with His Name! But wait – it gets better! When Jesus appeared to His disciples after He rose from the dead, He gave the Great Commission. In those words, “All Power has been given to Me in heaven and in earth, Go ye therefore…” He conferred all that authority back upon the Church – that’s you and me!
One thing that is evident throughout the scriptures is that God will never go back on His Word. Once He has spoken something it is no longer negotiable. It is spiritual law. Therefore, the power of binding and loosing (actually “locking and unlocking”) is with men – not God. God has given US the keys, and if WE don’t use the keys of heaven, heaven will remain locked. The Good News is that there are keys, and they have been given to us! We have the keys to the amazing and spectacular Kingdom of God!
Sadly, many Christians have not used their keys to unlock the power that will kick in the gates of hell. They have given them (in a sense) to the enemy, by believing His lies instead of Jesus’ Words! Jesus said that the man who hears and does His Words, is building his house on The Rock! Many choose to ARGUE about the Word of God instead of DOING the Word of God! Instead of acting on it, they just analyze it! James said (James 2:20) that their faith is dead. They have given their keys to the enemy. Meanwhile, Heaven remains open to those who USE the keys, but locked to those who debate them.
Again Keys place us in authority here in this fallen world. Your Father wants you to use them and unlock the power that Jesus paid to give you – because He loves you. Love empowers us and frees us. So, use those keys and take a spin around the block! He’ll never leave or forsake you!
