“Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 2 Kings 6:16

This scripture has often been quoted to bring hope to those who feel surrounded by the hostile

armies of this life. Those armies come in many forms: financial pressures, terminal diagnoses, bank accounts emptied by hackers, a government bent on selling our future out to China, and opening our borders and exposing us to criminals, terrorists, drug and sex trafficking cartels… and seeks every opportunity to confuse and indoctrinate our children (yes, OUR children- not theirs) into gender identity, bodily mutilation, and worse. It could be the FBI knocking on OUR door… and the list goes on…

Yet the pivotal point of this story in 2 Kings 5:8-23, which is the key and deciding factor of either victory or defeat, gets somehow lost in the wonder of the story itself.

That key is found in two different reactions to the shock of bad news. One reaction was Fear, which had a paralyzing effect on Elisha’s servant. The other reaction was that of Faith, which empowered one man, Elisha the prophet, over the entire Syrian Army!

The servant’s reaction was one of Fear, revealed in his words. “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” Fear always causes us to default to our own strength, power, and ability, and away from God. “Alas, my master! What shall WE do?” (Emphasis on WE)

Faith, always looks to the unlimited resources of our God, and the Covenant Provisions He has given us! Faith was demonstrated in Elisha’s words when he said, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

If you read the story, you’ll see that Elisha went on to pray for his servant that God would open his eyes to see into the spirit realm. When his eyes were open, he saw the hills around Elisha were filled with chariots of fire, and angels who were ready to do whatever Elisha commanded them to do!

Do you know that you have a better Covenant than Elisha had, based on better promises? Hebrews 8:6 tells us that we, who have entered into the New Covenant through the new birth, have a better Covenant based on better promises, and that our Covenant is mediated by the very One who gave His life for us, and would withhold nothing from us! Do you know that you have an innumerable company of angels ready to do whatever you command them to do? Do you realize that whenever you are taken by surprise by Life’s enemy armies, that you have angels that can blind your enemies and lead you to victory? Those angels have already been sent to serve you simply because you are an heir of salvation (Hebrews 1:14)!

Fear or Faith? I don’t know about you, but I choose to believe God; to walk in His Word, by which His provisions come to us as we appropriate His Word by Faith! He loves you! He has provided for you! He has everything in place. He just needs you to take a stand and believe Him, and you will see the glory of God!

With Love,

Pastor Tom
